29 Jun 2003 Circular Drive, Greasby SJ258874 Adult 5 CONSIDERED AND ACCEPTED BY CMG PANEL MARCH 2006 known site for this species visited today by invitation, the occupant had retained a female that emerged that morning and we used this to attract a mate in. the female was photographed at 9.30am and a male was noted to have emerged from the 50+ year old sallow in the garden at approx 9.40am. this was so fresh it still has hairy like scales on the wings! these fell off when the male flapped his wings a little to warm up. by approx 10.30am the female was obviously 'calling' with her ovipositor extended and being twirled slowly round. at about this time a male was seen in flight (different to the male that had emerged that morning). then at 10.40am the female was placed upon the leaf on the sallow and almost immediately a male (which was slightly worn and therefore presumably a few days old - the genitalia parts must have to harden before being useable (slightly dodgy phraseology used here!) as the male that had emerged that morning showed no interest in mating and was released) came into view and started courting her. he acted in an almost bee-like manner shaking and crawling rapidly all over the female and attempted to mate quickly (the claspers could clearly be seen). unfortunately he fell off so we moved the female to a log which had been used for photography. the male then flew around me and eventually landed on my finger presumably as he could detect the scent on my hands as I had moved the female. he then found her and started the courting actions again and they eventually paired at or around 10.46am. they remained paired until at least 1.30pm when they separated and flew. at approx 3pm.A female (probably the same one) was flying around the same sallow and laying eggs. contrary to what the literature says, the eggs were laid in small batches of 3/4 on the underside of leaves at the tip of the stem. Occupant actually saw the egg laying process and the eggs in situ. another male was found that had unfortunately not managed to inflate its wings properly. there were at least 20 pupal cases and this indicates a strong colony!
